Deltacubic Devlog 1.9.21

Figuring things out

After playing Deltarune (chapter 1 demo), I found out that there's been a game missing from the VideoToaster Hall of Fame this whole time. And man, I thought Undertale was good...

Deltarune is a natural progression of that one RPG that everyone knows about. Same universe, same mechanics. But there's so much changed that it's an absolutely amazing experience.

The party mechanics and the battle system immediately come to mind. Not to mention the more technical bits and bobs, and you got yourself a bonified sequel. So, where does cubing a number come into play?

Deltacubic

Deltacubic is a fangame based on the popular video game Deltarune with a custom story and characters. This isn't slang for "Yeah, I opened Ralsei in GIMP and ran Hue-Saturation, totally original, don't steal!", I mean custom characters. I'm working on getting sprites for all of them at the moment. Even if I don't finish many projects, I'm hoping this one is one of those projects that do slip through the floodgates.

NERD SHIT INCOMING

GameMaker

GameMaker was actually the original engine used for Undertale and Deltarune. It's a simple game engine with a nice programming language called "GameMaker Lang", or GML for short. It has syntax similar to that of C, or Java, or C++. This language is extraordinarily powerful and can be used to create some pretty amazing experiences.

However, I'm inexperienced with the language. I understand the syntax and how it functions (as I have experience with all 3 of the aforementioned similarly formatted languages), but I may not utilize every feature to the fullest extent. This game will hopefully be a functional experience on the web and on desktop. It should also incorporate the feature set of at least Undertale. If I can't reach that point, I'll compromise on something else. I don't want to waste any volunteer's time.

Why not RPG Maker, tideo?

I would have used RPG Maker VX Ace if it weren't for the fact that it doesn't and can't output to HTML5 or SWF. Sure, MZ technically outputs HTML, but it's borked in any web browser as it's designed for NW.js.

Isn't this a little ambitious?

No. I don't think this is much of an undertaking.

I have plenty of experience with Unity and engines like RPG Maker. GML is proving to be extraordinarily easy to learn. Things are going well.

But I guess we'll just have to see...

This project is also on GameJolt and itch.io.
